The county Wexford fishing village of Duncannon is located in the south west of the county and first held races in the early part of the 19th century. A wonderful racecourse was developed on the sands and racing was certainly taking place on Thursday 12th November 1833 when the unfortunate bay horse owned by Mr Boswell collided with another horse when contesting the Silver Cup and was killed on the spot. By 1840 the Duncannon steamer brought crowds each day for the two day meeting on Wednesday 30th September and Thursday 1st October. On the first day the Duncannon Silver Cup was won by Mr Potter’s bay mare, defeating Mr Fraine’s and Mr Murphy’s mares after two heats. The next day the Duncannon Cup went to Mr Watt Walshe’s Aglish Lass. Meetings continued in the 1850s when they were combined with the annual fair, while in the 1870s there were disputes between owners and the race committee over the ages of horses entered in a race for five year olds. Although racing lapsed, meetings were revived in the latter part of the 19th century and the final event took place on Monday 18th July 1904.
